Early Life and Education

Vasili Grigorevich Fesenkov was born on January 13, 1889, in Novocherkassk, Russia. He graduated from the Kharkov University in 1911 and later studied at the Sorbonne, where he earned his doctorate in 1914.

Career in Astrophysics

Fesenkov's primary research focused on atmospheric optics, astrophysics, and cosmogony. He was one of the pioneers in the photometry of zodiacal light and developed a dynamic theory for its origin. He also proposed a hypothesis on the corpuscular radiation of stars and their formation from interstellar gas and dust.

Leadership in Astronomy

Fesenkov played a significant role in shaping the field of astronomy. He co-founded the Russian Astrophysical Institute (later known as the P.K. Shternberg Astronomical Institute) and served as its director from 1923 to 1924 and again from 1936 to 1939. He also established the Astrophysical Institute of the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences.

Contributions to Cosmogony

Fesenkov made important contributions to cosmogony. He developed a criterion for the tidal stability of celestial bodies, which helped explain various features of the Solar System and the formation and evolution of galactic objects.

Recognition and Honors

Fesenkov was elected a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1935 and a corresponding member in 1927. He was also a full member of the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences. His achievements were recognized with three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
