Vasilii Asanchuk: A Loyalist Diplomat
Vasilii Asanchuk, born as the third son of the boyar Grigorii Vasilevich, was one of many in his family who served the Muscovite princes.
Diplomatic Mission to Konrad of Mazovia
In 1493, Asanchuk was dispatched along with the diak Vladimir Dolmatov on a diplomatic mission to Prince Konrad of Mazovia, an enemy of the Jagiellons. The purpose of this mission was to assess Konrad's resolve in opposing the Polish king and Lithuanian prince, who was pursuing marriage with Ivan III's daughter.
Reception of the Lithuanian Embassy
In late 1494, Asanchuk and his brother Petr welcomed a Lithuanian embassy in Moscow. Together with their brother Aleksei, they accompanied Ivan III to Novgorod.
Abrupt Demise
Asanchuk's diplomatic career met an abrupt end in 1499, coinciding with the execution of Semen Ivanovich Ryapolovsky. The circumstances surrounding their sudden downfall remain shrouded in mystery.
