Farid Kasumov: A Legendary Azerbaijani Footballer
Early Career and SuccessFarid Kasumov, a former Soviet and Azerbaijani footballer, began his journey in the youth team of "Pishchevik" in his hometown of Kirovabad. His talent was evident early on, leading him to become part of the Soviet Union's under-16 team, which triumphed in the 1985 European Youth Championship.
Soviet Clubs and Rise to Prominence
Kasumov spent several years playing for Ukrainian clubs in the Soviet leagues, including "Trudovye Rezervy," "Mayak," and "Metalist Kharkiv." His exceptional skills as a striker caught the attention of "Neftchi Baku," where he showcased his abilities in the Soviet Top League between 1987 and 1991.
Post-Soviet Success and Russian Championship
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kasumov moved to Moscow, where he joined the prestigious clubs "Spartak Moscow" and "Dynamo Moscow." In 1992, he became the top scorer in the inaugural Russian Premier League, earning him the No. 1 spot in the "33 Best" list of players.
Spanish Triumphs and Injury Setback
Kasumov embarked on a successful career in Spain, playing for "Real Betis" and "Albacete." His time with Albacete was cut short by a severe injury inflicted by Teneriffe's Jokanovic, resulting in broken toes. The injury forced Kasumov out for five months, and Albacete was relegated to the second division.
Segunda Division and Portuguese Clubs
Initially reluctant to play in the second tier, Kasumov eventually agreed to join "Ecija" in La Liga 2. He later moved to Portugal, representing "Vitoria Setubal" and "Immortal Albufeira" before retiring in 2001.
International Career and Legacy
Kasumov made 14 appearances for the Azerbaijan national team. His retirement marked the end of a remarkable career, leaving a lasting legacy as one of his country's greatest footballers. Kasumov currently resides in Spain.
