Vesna Pusić: Croatian Politician and Diplomat
Early Life and EducationVesna Pusić was born in Zagreb, Croatia to a family with a strong academic background. Her father, Eugen Pusić, was a law professor at the University of Zagreb, while her mother, Višnja, taught English. Pusić's brother, Zoran, became a prominent civil rights and peace activist.
In 1971, Pusić graduated from high school and went on to study sociology and philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Zagreb, graduating in 1976. From 1975 to 1979, she participated in an international research group investigating industrial democracy in Europe.
Academic Career and Political Beginnings
In 1976, Pusić began her academic career at the University of Ljubljana, where she worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Sociology. In 1978, she returned to Zagreb to teach at the Faculty of Philosophy, specializing in industrial democracy and political sociology. She earned her PhD in sociology in 1984 and became a full professor in 1988.
In 1978, Pusić co-founded the first feminist organization in Yugoslavia, Žena i društvo (Women and Society), which faced strong opposition from the communist authorities of the time. In 1990, she became one of the founding members of the Croatian People's Party (HNS).
Involvement in National Politics
Pusić served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 2000 onwards. She led the HNS from 2000 to 2008 and held the position of Vice President of the European Party of Liberal Democrats and Reformers in 2006 and 2008.
In 2005 and 2008, Pusić was appointed as the head of the National Committee for Negotiations with the EU, which oversaw Croatia's accession negotiations.
Tenure as Foreign Minister
From 2011 to 2016, Pusić served as the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs in the left-center government of Zoran Milanović. During her tenure, Croatia successfully completed its accession negotiations with the EU and joined the bloc in 2013.
Later Career and Legacy
After leaving government, Pusić continued to be active in academia and public life. She lectured at various universities, including the University of Chicago, Cornell University, and the American University in Washington, D.C.
Vesna Pusić is widely respected as a prominent liberal politician and a tireless advocate for democracy and European integration in Croatia. Her contributions to Croatian society and international diplomacy have left a lasting impact on the country's development and its place in the world.
