Early Life and Education

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a prominent German physicist, was born on March 27, 1845, in Lennep, near Düsseldorf. His father was a wealthy wool merchant, and the family moved to the Netherlands when Röntgen was three years old. He initially attended a private school in Apeldoorn and then a technical school in Utrecht, where he planned to enter his family's textile business. However, Röntgen also pursued his interests in natural sciences by auditing physics lectures at the University of Utrecht.

Unable to complete his studies in Utrecht, Röntgen sought to earn a university preparatory diploma as an external student at another institution but failed. In 1865, he traveled to Zurich to study mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic, where such a diploma was not required. Based on his strong academic record in Utrecht, Röntgen was exempted from the entrance exam, unlike the young Albert Einstein who later encountered the same obstacle.

Academic Career

For three years, Röntgen diligently studied mechanical engineering, showing particular aptitude in applied mathematics and technical physics. Upon completing his engineering degree, he followed the advice of physicist August Kundt and pursued experimental physics. In 1869, he earned his doctorate in philosophy based on his research on gas theory.

In 1874, Röntgen followed Kundt to the University of Strasbourg, where he passed examinations for teaching physics and mathematics. He became a professor at the Agricultural College in Hohenheim the following year. However, in 1876, he returned to Strasbourg and, in 1879, received a professorship at the University of Gießen. There, he focused on electromagnetism and optics, notably uncovering the magnetic field generated by moving charges. His other contributions during this period included investigations into the physics of quartz crystals.

Scientific Breakthrough and Nobel Prize

In 1888, Röntgen was appointed to the University of Würzburg and became its rector in 1894. On November 8, 1895, within the walls of Würzburg University, Röntgen made the groundbreaking discovery that would bring him global recognition.

Using common laboratory equipment, including an induction coil with an interrupter, a discharge tube, and a fluorescent screen, Röntgen observed an unusual glow from crystals lying on his laboratory bench. Similarly, a paper screen coated with barium platinocyanide emitted a pale green glow. Further experiments revealed that these "invisible rays" could penetrate objects, leaving images of their bones and internal structures on photographic plates.

Impact and Recognition

Röntgen's discovery, now known as X-rays, revolutionized the field of medicine and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. The nature of these rays was not fully understood until 1912, when physicists Laue, Friedrich, and Knipping demonstrated their origins in the collision of cathode rays with the walls of the discharge tube.

Röntgen's invention had a profound impact on science and society, enabling medical imaging and diagnostic techniques. He was awarded numerous prestigious honors, including the Rumford Medal, the Royal Bavarian Crown Order, and the Iron Cross.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1900, Röntgen was recruited to the University of Munich, where he remained a professor until his retirement in 1920. From 1903 to 1906, the Russian physicist A.F. Ioffe served as his assistant. Röntgen passed away in Munich on February 10, 1923, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that continues to inspire and benefit humankind.
