Biography of Vincent Moon

Vincent Moon is an independent French film director and photographer who gained fame for shooting unique music videos featuring both renowned artists and young bands he encounters during his numerous travels. Unlike many other directors, Moon is not motivated by money but rather by the art of cinema and challenging preconceived notions about independent and non-commercial filmmaking.

Vincent Moon

Born on August 25, 1979, in Paris, France, Moon developed a passion for photography from a young age. After finishing school, he decided to pursue a career as a photographer and spent the next three years studying photography at a studio in Paris. During this time, Moon met some of France's most famous photographers as well as international guests who frequently visited Paris for exhibitions and shoots. Influenced by their work, Moon began experimenting with creating moving images, sequences of photographs that evolved into short films lasting only a few seconds.

This led Moon to discover videography and the world of cinema, which had previously seemed distant and unknown to him. His early works were experiments with different styles of storytelling and equipment, laying the foundation for his distinct authorial style that became more prominent in his later works.

Moon's idea of shooting music videos was inspired by his friendship with the musicians from 'The National,' who spent several days in Moon's company after a few concerts in France. Just a few months later, in 2006, he launched the project 'The Take Away Shows,' which brought him international recognition. The concept of the project was simple: the videos were shot during a band's performance in an unconventional setting, such as on the street, in an abandoned building, or any other place where passersby would least expect to see a full band. The simplicity and accessibility of these videos, devoid of the usual gloss and special effects, set them apart from other music videos.

Over the next three years, Moon continued to film performances by various bands, resulting in a collection of over 200 recordings by 2009. Interestingly, all of Moon's works can be easily found on the internet because, as he himself stated, he does not want to limit potential viewers based on financial or territorial factors.

In 2009, Moon embarked on a new project called 'Collection Petites Planètes,' which continues to this day. This project focuses on documenting folklore, religious, and ritualistic practices from around the world. Moon has visited over 25 countries, including Russia, where he recorded a series of videos about the country's musical culture and explored various cities and folklore research centers. In recent years, Moon has devoted significant attention to the concept of the sacred in modern life and uses his work to showcase the evolution and, in his opinion, the gradual return of traditional beliefs in certain parts of the world.
