Early Life and Education

Vitaly Vasilyevich Fortigin was born in 1943 in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He graduated from the Miass Technical School with a degree in hydrogeology. Fortigin's military service took place at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Soviet Army. In 1972, he received his degree from the Leningrad Mining Institute.

Career in Geology

From 1972, Fortigin worked with the Arkhangelsk Geologorazvedochnaya Expedition. He climbed the ranks, becoming Chief Engineer in 1979 and Expedition Manager in 1993. Under his leadership, the expedition played a vital role in evaluating the Lomonosov diamond deposit.

Business in Diamond Mining

In 1994, Fortigin became Deputy General Director of Arkhangelskgeologia. The following year, he was elected General Director of RAO Severalmaz, a company dedicated to developing the Lomonosov diamond deposit. Fortigin also held a position on the Board of Directors of OAO Severalmaz.

Political Career

In 2000, Fortigin became Chairman of the Arkhangelsk Regional Branch of the Unity Movement. He led the initiative group supporting Vladimir Putin's presidential candidacy. At the founding congress of the United Russia party, he was elected to its Political Council.

Election to the Regional Assembly

In June 2000, Fortigin was elected as a deputy to the Arkhangelsk Regional Assembly. In December, he was elected as its Chairman. The election was delayed due to the incomplete formation of the Assembly, which saw 16 of 39 deputies not elected in the initial round.

Recognition and Honors

Fortigin's contributions have been recognized with the Russian Government Prize for Science and Technology. In 1992, he received the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for his work in developing diamond deposits near Arkhangelsk.
