Prelude to Business and Politics
Born in the humble town of Torez, Vitaliy Haiduk embarked on his educational journey at Donetsk Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1980 with a degree in Economics and Organization of Mechanical Engineering. His academic credentials also include a Doctorate in Economics.
Early Career and Rivalry
In the 1980s, Haiduk took the helm of the Zuyevsk Energy and Mechanical Plant, marking his debut in leadership. During this period, he forged a rapport with Sergey Tulub, then the First Secretary of the Khartsyzsk City Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, who later rose to prominence in the coal industry.
Ascent in Regional Governance
Haiduk's political career gained momentum in 1994 as Deputy Head of Donetsk Regional State Administration. Under his influence, the corporation "Industrial Union of Donbas" (ISD) emerged, capitalizing on his administrative prowess. The corporation swiftly became a dominant gas trader in the region, employing barter schemes that propelled its rapid financial growth.
Rise to National Prominence
In the early 2000s, Haiduk ascended to key positions in Ukraine's energy sector, serving as First Deputy Minister and then Minister of Fuel and Energy. His influence extended to the position of Vice Prime Minister for Fuel and Energy Complex in 2002.
Controversial Tenure and Political Divide
Haiduk's tenure was marked by a vocal opposition to the government's reversal of the Odessa-Brody oil pipeline in 2003, leading to his subsequent resignation. Some speculate that his criticism stemmed from foreknowledge of his dismissal.
Balancing Act in the Political Arena
In 2005, President Viktor Yushchenko considered appointing Haiduk as Vice Prime Minister for Fuel and Energy Complex. However, this move was met with resistance from energy executives, prompting Yushchenko to ultimately appoint Haiduk as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine in 2006. This decision was seen as a strategic attempt to counterbalance the influence of Viktor Yanukovych's financial-industrial group, which had ties to ISD.
Departure from the National Security Council
Haiduk's tenure as Secretary concluded in May 2007, with President Yushchenko appointing Ivan Plyush as his successor.
