He graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1974, majoring in organic synthesis technology, and began working as a foreman at the Ukrainian branch of the Dolgoprudny OPU. In 1990, he was appointed as the head of this branch.

Early Activism

Even at that time, Vitaliy Kononov was actively involved in public life. In 1989, he was one of the co-organizers of the First Republican Festival of Contemporary Ukrainian Song "Krasna Ruta," which took place from September 17 to 26 in Chernivtsi. From 1990 to 1997, he worked as the deputy director of the cruise company "Krasna Ruta."

Green Party of Ukraine

In 1990, Vitaliy Kononov joined the All-Ukrainian Ecological Association "Green World." Together with other activists of this organization, he co-founded the Green Party of Ukraine (GPU) in September 1990 and was elected co-chairman. On October 9, 1992, delegates of the GPU congress elected Vitaliy Kononov as the head of the party.

Political Career

In the parliamentary elections of 1994, Vitaliy Kononov ran for the position of a deputy in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from the Gagarin single-mandate constituency No. 3. However, he received only 9.28% of the votes and did not make it into the parliament. In the parliamentary elections of 1998, he participated as the first candidate on the GPU electoral list and was elected to the Verkhovna Rada.

On October 31, 1999, Vitaliy Kononov took part in the first round of the presidential elections. He ranked 11th out of 13 candidates, receiving 0.29% of the votes (76,832 votes). In the parliamentary elections on March 31, 2002, he ran again as the first candidate on the GPU electoral list. However, the party lost the elections, and Vitaliy Kononov did not make it into the Verkhovna Rada.

The same thing happened in the parliamentary elections on March 26, 2006. Due to the party's failures, Vitaliy Kononov resigned as the head of the GPU on August 4, 2006. However, he was elected as the head of the party's political council on the same day and has been holding this position ever since. On September 30, 2007, Vitaliy Kononov participated in the parliamentary elections as the eighth candidate on the GPU electoral list, but the party once again failed to overcome the electoral threshold.
