Vladimir Alexandrovich Bazarov (1874-1939)
Early Life and EducationVladimir Alexandrovich Bazarov, also known as Rudnev, was born in Tula, Russia on August 8, 1874. He studied at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Moscow University from 1892 to 1897. During his university years, he became involved in the social democratic movement.
Political Career and Philosophical Pursuits
In 1904, Bazarov joined the Bolsheviks. However, after the 1905-1907 revolution, he gradually aligned himself with the Mensheviks. He was strongly critical of the October Revolution in 1917.
In his early philosophical writings, Bazarov critiqued the idealist positions of authors in the collection "Problems of Idealism."
Empiriocriticism and Marxism
Bazarov embraced empiriocriticism, attempting to reconcile its epistemological principles with Marxist theory. He criticized "dogmatic materialism" and debated the "hieroglyphic" theory of Georgi Plekhanov and the reflection theory of Vladimir Lenin.
Pragmatism and Metaphysics
Pragmatism influenced Bazarov's understanding of philosophy as an instrument for transforming the world. He perceived "mysticism" not only in Henri Bergson's concept of creative evolution but also in Plekhanov's dialectical materialism.
Sociological Views
In his sociological views, Bazarov emphasized the primacy of "production relations" in historical processes and the secondary nature of "superstructural" formations.
Political Repression and Death
In 1930, Bazarov was arrested on charges of being involved in an organization of "specialist-wreckers." He died in prison on September 16, 1939.
