Rodionov recently spoke out regarding the ongoing criminal case against the Russian Basketball Federation (RFB). He revealed that he had been aware of the case for some time and had provided information as a witness. He exposed small-scale fraud schemes involving the magazine "Planeta Basketbol" and shed light on the misappropriation of funds intended for the preparation of Russian national teams.
Estimation of Misappropriated Funds
Rodionov believes that two-thirds of the RFB's revenue could have been misappropriated. He expressed concern over the involvement of RFB officials, such as vice-president Andrei Shirokov, in companies that conducted business with the federation. He also criticized VTB Bank for its reckless allocation of funds to the creation of a basketball league, which was overseen by questionable figures like Chernov and Shirokov.
Corruption and Inaction
Rodionov decried the lack of accountability in Russian basketball, highlighting the prevalence of corruption even at the lowest levels. He expressed disappointment that the "Black Case" scandal, sparked in May, had not led to significant consequences, despite ample evidence and public attention. He attributed this inaction to bureaucratic inertia and the unwillingness of authorities to confront uncomfortable truths.
Role of Clubs in Corruption
Rodionov acknowledged the complicity of many clubs in the fraud schemes, which they participated in to gain an unfair advantage. He recognized that this greed had ultimately backfired, as they had fostered a corrupt system that ultimately consumed them. However, he also attributed the federation's lack of oversight to the cunning of Alexander Chernov, who had surrounded himself with loyal subordinates and established a intricate network of checks and balances.
Future of Russian Basketball
Despite the challenges, Rodionov remained optimistic about the future of Russian basketball. He expressed faith that the newly appointed RFB president would initiate positive changes. He predicted that the sport's fortunes could only improve from their current low point.
