Vladimir Shkodrov: Bulgarian Astronomer and Asteroid Discoverer
Early Life and EducationVladimir Shkodrov was born in Lom, Bulgaria, in 1930. He completed his secondary education in Belogradchik in 1948 and went on to study at Sofia University. In 1969, he obtained a doctorate from Leningrad University.
Research and Discoveries
Working out of the Rozhen Observatory, Shkodrov collaborated with Erik Elst and Violeta Ivanova to discover a total of eight asteroids between 1984 and 1988. Half of these discoveries were made independently by Shkodrov. One of the most notable discoveries was (4486) Mithra, identified on September 22, 1987, as a potentially hazardous asteroid due to its close proximity to Earth.
Academic and Administrative Career
In 1991, Shkodrov became the rector of the University of "Bishop Konstantin Preslavski" in Shumen. From 1994 to 1997, he served as the director of the Institute of Astronomy. Additionally, he was elected as a member of the 37th National Assembly in 1995 and later became the rector of the Education Center at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Legacy
Shkodrov has published over 200 scientific articles and monographs and has led numerous research projects. He established an astronomy laboratory at the University of "Bishop Konstantin Preslavski." In recognition of his contributions, asteroid (4364) Shkodrov was named after him.
