Vladimír Weiss: A Celebrated Footballer and Coach
Early Life and Playing CareerVladimir Weiss, a renowned Slovak footballer and coach, emerged from a family with a strong footballing lineage. His father, also named Vladimir, competed in the Rome Olympics. As a player, Weiss represented several clubs in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He also played for the Czechoslovakia and Slovakia national teams, participating in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Coaching Career
Artmedia PetržalkaWeiss embarked on his coaching journey in 1996, serving as both a player-coach and head coach for Artmedia Petržalka for a decade. He guided the club to its first Slovak Cup win in 2004 and the Slovak Super Liga title in 2005. Notably, Artmedia Petržalka reached the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2005/06, becoming the first Slovak club to achieve this feat.
FC Saturn Ramenskoye and Return to Artmedia
In 2006, Weiss ventured into Russian football, taking charge of FC Saturn Ramenskoye. Despite high expectations, Saturn finished 11th in the 2006 season. He was dismissed after a poor start to the 2007 season. After a brief return to Artmedia Petržalka, leading them to a league and cup double in 2008, Weiss took the reins of the Slovak national team.
Slovakia National Team
Under Weiss's leadership, Slovakia qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2010, advancing to the Round of 16. However, he failed to qualify for Euro 2012, leading to his resignation in January 2012. Weiss then managed Slovan Bratislava, guiding them to the Slovak Super Liga title in 2022.
FC Kairat
From 2012 to 2015, Weiss coached FC Kairat in Kazakhstan. During his tenure, the club secured three podium finishes and won two Kazakhstan Cups. Despite their success, Kairat failed to claim the league title, and Weiss's contract was not renewed in November 2015.
Georgia National Team
In March 2016, Weiss was appointed head coach of the Georgia national team. His tenure ended in November 2020 after Georgia's defeat in the Euro 2021 qualifying playoffs.
Personal Life
Weiss's son, also named Vladimir, is a professional footballer playing as a midfielder.
