Vroni König-Salmi: A Trailblazing Orienteer
Career HighlightsVroni König-Salmi is a Swiss orienteering legend, having achieved unprecedented success at world and European championships. Her first World Championship appearance was in 1989, and she represented Switzerland in every subsequent championship except one (Kyiv 2007).
Record-Breaking Achievements
Vroni's legacy extends beyond her remarkable 12 World Championship appearances. At the age of 39, she secured a silver medal at the 2008 World Championships in the Czech Republic, defying expectations. Her historic gold medal at the 2001 World Championships marked the debut of the sprint discipline in world competition.
European Dominance
In 2002, Vroni became the first European champion in the sprint discipline, making her the first woman to claim sprint gold at both the European and World Championships.
International Triumphs
Vroni spent over a decade competing for the Finnish club Turun Suunnistajat, with whom she won the prestigious Venla Relay in 2002. The 2010 World Championships proved to be her last as an active competitor.
Career Transition
Post-retirement, Vroni returned to Switzerland after years of living in Finland. She currently contributes to the Swiss National Orienteering Training Center, supporting various projects and mentoring athletes, including Simone Niggli as her personal coach since 2011.

Vroni is married to Finnish orienteer Janne Salmi and has four children.
