Biography of Walter Cavanagh
Walter Cavanagh, also known as Mr. Plastic Fantastic, is an American who holds the record for the largest collection of credit cards. It all started with a bet between Walter and his friend about who would have more credit cards by the end of the year. Walter won the bet and acquired 143 credit cards from various banks. This sparked his interest, and he continued to collect cards, turning it into a hobby and a world-famous collection.
Mr. Plastic Fantastic
Walter Cavanagh, known as Mr. Plastic Fantastic, resides in Santa Clara, California. He is retired and well-known in his hometown. His unique collection of bank credit cards has earned him fame worldwide. In 2005, he set a world record with 1,497 credit cards, surpassing his own previous records. His passion for collecting cards has earned him the nickname Mr. Plastic Fantastic.
A Record-Breaking Collection
While some people may possess more credit cards than Walter Cavanagh, he holds the official Guinness World Record for his collection. His wallet, which weighs nearly 40kg, can accommodate around 800 cards. All the cards he has collected allow him to have a credit limit of almost two million dollars. However, Walter primarily uses only one card and pays it off at the end of each month.
Financial Self-Discipline
Walter Cavanagh emphasizes financial self-discipline as his golden rule. He advises never taking on credit amounts that cannot be paid off within two months. His nearly perfect credit history is a testament to his prudent financial practices. Only one bank, J.J. Newberry Co., rejected his credit card application in the 1970s, citing his excessive credit obligations. Despite this rejection, Walter has accumulated nearly 1,500 credit cards, with only one notable exclusion.
A Golfing Retirement
In recent years, Walter Cavanagh's focus on expanding his collection has diminished since his retirement. He has developed a strong passion for golf and dedicates a significant amount of time to the sport. Nevertheless, his credit card collection remains impressive and reflects the history and evolution of American bank credit cards over the past few decades.
