Biography of Warner Baxter
Warner LeRoy Baxter was born on March 29, 1889, in Columbus, Ohio. After his father's death in 1898, he moved to San Francisco with his mother. In 1906, Baxter experienced a devastating earthquake in San Francisco, after which he and his mother had to live in a tent for two weeks.
Early Career
Baxter's acting career began in 1910 with his participation in vaudeville shows. He made his film debut in 1918, and within a short period of time, he reached the pinnacle of stardom, starring in leading roles since 1921. Memorable roles in films such as "The Cisco Kid" (1928) and "42nd Street" (1933) cemented his status as a versatile actor. However, his most notable achievement came with his portrayal of Cisco Kid in the first sound western film, "In Old Arizona" (1928), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Later Career and Personal Life
In 1936, Baxter became the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. However, after 1943, he gradually shifted towards roles in B-category films. Throughout his film career from 1914 to 1950, Baxter appeared in over a hundred movies, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
From 1918 until his death, Warner Baxter was married to actress Winifred Baxter. He passed away from pneumonia at the age of 62. In recognition of his contributions to cinema, Baxter was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His portrayal of Cisco Kid and his Oscar-winning performance remain iconic pieces of his legacy.
