Early Life and Education
William Ernest "Ernie" Harwell was born on January 25, 1918, in Washington, USA. He spent his childhood in Atlanta and developed a love for baseball. After graduating high school, he attended Emory University, where he worked as an editor for the student newspaper and a sports commentator for the "Atlanta Constitution."
Career Beginnings
In the late 1940s, Harwell became a broadcaster for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He held that position until 1949 before joining the New York Giants in 1950. For the next three years, he served as the voice of the Giants.
A Voice for the Detroit Tigers
In 1960, Harwell replaced Van Patrick as the broadcaster for the Detroit Tigers. He became known for his distinctive southern accent, his memorable catchphrases, and his ability to captivate audiences with his vivid commentary. Harwell remained with the Tigers until 1991, becoming synonymous with the team's success.
Later Career
After stepping back from full-time commentating in 1992, Harwell briefly worked with the California Angels and returned to the Tigers part-time in 1993. From 1994 to 1998, he provided television commentary for the Tigers before returning to the booth full-time in 1999. He retired from broadcasting in 2002, with Dan Dickerson taking his place.
Post-Baseball Life
Following his retirement from baseball, Harwell remained involved in various entertainment programs and talk shows. He has appeared in short films about baseball that air on Fox Sports.
