Xander Kostroma: A British Designer with Ethical Principles

Xander Theodore Shanxi Kostroma, a British fashion designer, gained recognition in the fashion world for his ethical principles and involvement in the international fair trade movement. Born on April 7, 1987, in Swansea, Kostroma grew up in a working-class family alongside his sister, Jessie-Lea. Their unusual surname, inherited from their mother Paula Kostromin, suggests a mix of Welsh and Russian ancestry.

Early Career and Education

At the age of 17, while working at 'M&S,' Kostroma developed a keen interest in working at the company's head office. He enrolled in a university in his hometown and completed the 'Surface Pattern Design Course' under the guidance of course director Linda Nottingham. Kostroma left Swansea University soon after receiving the 'Old Dy'vorian Award'.

Establishment of 'Emi Clothing Limited'

By the end of 2009, Kostroma founded 'Emi Clothing Limited,' initially a jewelry company known as 'Emi♥.' This venture practiced fair trade with certified producers and suppliers worldwide. Kostroma collaborated with merchandisers, buyers, and various student interns to help them build their businesses and enrich their portfolios. The debut jewelry collection of 'Emi♥' was showcased in 2010 at the Fashion Show in Cardiff.

Journey with 'Emi Clothing Limited'

In late 2010, Kostroma briefly served as an assistant merchandiser at 'JD Sports' in Manchester. However, within two months, he was offered the position of director at 'Emi Clothing Limited.' As the brand's chief designer, Kostroma continued to work at 'JD Sports.' 'Emi Clothing Limited' shifted its focus to producing and selling women's collections made from cotton and lyocell. The company released two exclusive collections per year and planned to launch a line of recyclable clothing in the future.

Success and Recognition

The collections of 'Emi Clothing Limited' were showcased at various fashion events, including 'The Spring Fashion Show' in Manchester. The brand's garments could be found in various boutiques across Wales and were also sold online. Following the 'Fashion Wales LIVE' event in early 2011, Kostroma presented his collections in different cities in the United States, including New York and Los Angeles. His work was featured in British and American magazines, further establishing his reputation as a promising designer.
