Yael Dayan: A Life in Politics and the Arts

Early Life and Education

Yael Dayan was born in Nahalal, during the British Mandate of Palestine, to General Moshe Dayan and his wife. She was raised in a military environment and served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). After her military service, Dayan pursued higher education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in international relations and at the Open University in biology.

Writing Career

Before embarking on her political career, Yael Dayan was an accomplished writer and journalist. Her columns appeared in leading Israeli newspapers such as Yedioth Ahronoth, Maariv, Al HaMishmar, and Davar. She also published six novels, memoirs about the Six-Day War, and a biography of her father.

Political Activism and the Knesset

Anti-War Activist and NGO Leader

Dayan emerged as an outspoken anti-war activist, leading the "Peace Now" movement. She lectured extensively worldwide on issues of peace and security. In Israel, she campaigned for the rights of women, human rights, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Election to the Knesset

In 1992, Yael Dayan was elected to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, on the Labor Party ticket. She headed the Committee on Women's Rights and was re-elected in 1996 and 1999 (as part of the One Israel bloc).

2003 Election Defeat and Departure from Labor

After her defeat in the 2003 elections, Dayan left the Labor Party and joined Yossi Beilin's Meretz party. She led the Meretz list in the 2004 Tel Aviv municipal elections, where her party won five out of 31 seats. She served as the city's social services director until 2013.

Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv and Retirement

Coalition Partner in Tel Aviv

Dayan was appointed deputy mayor of Tel Aviv in 2004. She oversaw social welfare programs in the city and worked in coalition with Mayor Ron Huldai.

Retirement from Politics

In 2013, Mayor Huldai did not include Dayan on the party's list for the municipal elections. She subsequently ended her political career.
