Biography of Yael Naim
Early Life and CareerYael Naim, a French-Israeli singer and songwriter, was born in 1978 in Paris to a Tunisian Jewish immigrant family. At the age of 4, she and her family moved to Ramat HaSharon, Israel, where she spent her childhood. Even during her time in the Israel Defense Forces, Naim served as a soloist in the Israeli Air Force Orchestra.
Professional Career
Naim's professional career as a singer began with her participation in the musical "Les Dix Commandements". In 2001, she released her first solo album, "In a Man's Womb", which she recorded in Los Angeles with the collaboration of French guitarist and composer Kamil Rustam. One of her notable collaborations during this early period was the song "You Disappear", which she performed with Bruno Coulais for the film "Harrison's Flowers". Naim initially used the stage name "Yaël" for her performances.
Collaboration with David Donatien
Later, Naim started working with percussionist David Donatien, and together they recorded 13 of her songs in a studio set up in Naim's Paris apartment. In 2007, these tracks were compiled into her album "Yael Naim", which received critical acclaim and immediately entered the French album chart, reaching the 11th position. Naim's songs, recorded in French, English, and Hebrew, captivated both audiences and critics. Her style was characterized as a mix of jazz and folk, and her unique, intentionally raspy voice became highly recognizable.
Breakthrough with "New Soul"
Naim's true breakthrough came in early 2008 when her song "New Soul" was selected by Apple for the advertising campaign of their "MacBook Air" laptop. The song was personally chosen by Steve Jobs, and after the campaign launch, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart. By mid-February, "New Soul" had reached the 9th position on the chart, making Naim the first Israeli artist to achieve this feat. The song's highest record on the chart was the 7th position.
Continued Success
Riding on the wave of her success, Naim released her album "She Was a Boy" in 2010, which was preceded by the single "Go to the River".
