Yagub Elchiev

Early Life and Education

Yagub Elchiev, an esteemed Azerbaijani scientist and leading figure in parasitology, was born on December 21, 1938, in the village of Urud, Siysky Region, in the former Armenian SSR. After graduating with honors from the biology faculty of Azerbaijan State University in 1964, he embarked on an extensive career in scientific research and higher education.

Professional Career and Achievements

Elchiev held various senior positions at the Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS), including senior laboratory assistant, research associate, laboratory head, and deputy director. His dedication to parasitology led him to pursue advanced studies, culminating in the successful defense of his doctoral dissertation in 1984.

Teaching and Research

From 1995 to 2000, Elchiev shared his expertise as a professor at Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, where he taught courses in general zoology and parasitology. Concurrently, he directed a laboratory at the Institute of Zoology, ANAS.

Throughout his career, Elchiev published 106 peer-reviewed articles, authored two monographs, and made four groundbreaking discoveries. He guided seven PhD and doctoral candidates through their research endeavors.

Scientific Contributions

Elchiev's research delved into the biochemical and immunological foundations of parasite life. He investigated the protein, amino acid, and nucleic acid content of coccidial oocysts and cysts (Eimeria, Sarcocystis). His work revealed metabolic disturbances in proteins, amino acids, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle in experimental chicken eimeriosis and explored the effects of anticoccidial drugs on these biochemical parameters.

Elchiev's theoretical insights provided a better understanding of the biochemical mechanisms underlying parasite-host interactions. He developed innovative methods for obtaining pure cultures of eimeria oocysts, evaluating the efficacy of antieimeriosis drugs based on host biochemical markers, and utilizing alkyl derivatives of amino acids in the treatment of eimeriosis. Additionally, his research shed light on the role of T and B lymphocytes in chicken eimeriosis.
