Yaroslav Korolev: A Russian Basketball Player
Yaroslav Korolev is a Russian professional basketball player who played as a power forward. He started his career in the 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 seasons with the Saratov club "Avtodor." In 2003, he won a bronze medal at the European Championship as part of the Russian National Basketball Team for juniors under 16 years old. In the 2004/2005 season, he joined the CSKA club and became the champion of Russia (2005), the winner of the Russian Cup (2005), and a participant in the Final Four of the EuroLeague (2005). In 2005, he was selected as the 12th overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA draft.
Return to Russia and Career Challenges
In 2007, Korolev's contract with the Clippers was not renewed after playing only 34 games in the NBA over two seasons. He returned to Russia and signed a contract with the Moscow-based team "Dynamo." In November 2009, Korolev was selected in the fourth round of the NBA Development League draft by the Albuquerque Thunderbirds and was traded to the Reno Bighorns in January 2010. In July 2010, he signed a contract with the Spanish club "Granada."
Struggles and Retirement
In the 2011/2012 season, Korolev signed a contract with the Spanish club "San Sebastian." However, due to a serious knee injury and subsequent surgery, he did not participate in training and competitive processes as of December 30, 2011. He started the 2012/2013 season with the Spanish club "Lagun Aro," where he averaged 3.9 points per game. However, his contract was terminated at the end of November 2012.
In December 2016, at the age of 29, Korolev announced his retirement. He said, "A few years ago, I helped establish the 'Royal Basketball School,' a program for young basketball players that follows the same instructions my father once taught me how to play. After only six years, we have over 300 players and 8 courts throughout Los Angeles. In recent years, I combined playing abroad during the season with coaching work in the offseason. After playing the previous season for 'Navarra,' I decided to hang up my jersey for good and pick up the whistle and tactical board."
