Early Life and Education

Sir Norman Lockyer was born in Rugby, England, on May 17, 1836. He received his education at private institutions before pursuing a military career in 1857.

Military Service and Government Position

Lockyer served in the War Office from 1857 onward. In 1870, he became secretary of the government's Science Commission.

Professorship and Observatory Directorship

In 1881, Lockyer was appointed Professor of Astrophysics at King's College. From 1885 to 1913, he served as director of the college's Solar Physics Observatory in South Kensington.

Private Observatory and Helium Discovery

In 1913, Lockyer established a private observatory in Sidmouth, which was later renamed the Lockyer Observatory. He made significant contributions to spectroscopy, notably his observation of changes in the solar spectrum in 1866. He hypothesized that this was caused by atomic dissociation at higher temperatures. Independently of Pierre Janssen, he developed a method for observing solar prominences outside of eclipses. In 1871, he identified a bright yellow line in the prominence spectrum as a new element, which he named helium.

Stellar Spectral Classification

Lockyer also developed the first spectral classification system for stars.

Solar Eclipse Expeditions

Between 1870 and 1905, Lockyer led eight expeditions to observe total solar eclipses.

Publications and Journal Foundation

Lockyer was a prolific author, publishing works such as "Contribution to Solar Physics" (1873), "The Sun's Place in Nature" (1897), and "Inorganic Evolution" (1900). In 1869, he founded the renowned journal "Nature" and served as its editor until his death.

Death and Legacy

Sir Norman Lockyer passed away in Sidmouth, Devonshire, on August 16, 1920. His contributions to astrophysics and scientific research left a lasting legacy in the field.
