Early Beginnings and Move to Werder Bremen

In 1996, amidst a strong performance by FC Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League, midfielder Maksimov caught the attention of Werder Bremen. Despite the reluctance of Dynamo manager Lobanovsky to release him, Maksimov's desire to play abroad prevailed. A year later, Werder Bremen acquired him for 3.5 million marks, assigning him the number 7 shirt. He was expected to succeed the club's star playmaker, Andreas Herzog.

Success in Germany

Upon his arrival in Germany, Maksimov quickly established himself as a regular starter. His physique and playing style suited the Bundesliga, and he managed to provide four assists and earn one yellow card in the first half of the season. Werder Bremen finished seventh and qualified for the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

The following season, Maksimov continued to be a key player when healthy. He recorded an assist and two yellow cards but made his most significant contribution in the German Cup. He scored in three consecutive rounds against Bayer Leverkusen, Hansa Rostock, and Fortuna Düsseldorf. In the final against Bayern Munich, he opened the scoring in the fourth minute, helping Werder Bremen win via a penalty shootout.

Further Triumphs and Contract Issues

In the 1999/00 season, Maksimov avoided injuries and played 29 league matches, receiving seven yellow cards and one red card. Werder Bremen reached the final of the DFB-Pokal again, this time losing to Bayern Munich. In the semi-final, Maksimov scored the decisive goal against Stuttgart Kickers in stoppage time, securing his team's advancement to the final. The goal earned him a yellow card and a one-match ban for the final.

During the off-season, Maksimov considered offers from Hansa Rostock and Unterhaching but ultimately remained with Werder Bremen. However, he struggled with injuries and competition, only making eight appearances in the 2000/01 season. His contract was not automatically extended due to his limited playing time, and he fell out with manager Klaus Allofs, leading to his departure from the club.

Later Career and Retirement

Maksimov nearly joined Hansa Rostock but failed to agree on personal terms. He then signed a two-year contract with Waldhof Mannheim, a second-division club. He became a regular starter but suffered from injuries and the team failed to achieve promotion to the Bundesliga.

After making 16 appearances and scoring three goals in the 2001/02 season, Maksimov decided to leave Waldhof Mannheim and retire from professional football.
