Early Life and Education

Armenian scientist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NAS RA), and Honored Scientist of the Republic of Armenia. Graduated from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute (YerPI) in 1962 and postgraduate studies at the Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering in the specialty "Mechanisms, Machines, and Theory of Automatic Lines" from 1964 to 1967.

Academic Career

In 1967, he defended his candidate's dissertation at the Moscow State Institute of Mechanical Engineering. From 1962, he worked at YerPI, holding the positions of assistant (1962-1964), senior lecturer from 1967, then associate professor, professor, and head of the department. In 1988, he was elected rector of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, a position he held until 2006.

Research and Contributions

In 1975, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Theory of Mechanism Design with an Arbitrary Number of Finite Displacements of the Object" and became a professor in 1977. Under his leadership, the Polytechnic Institute was reorganized and renamed the State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) in 1992, with the educational institution moving to a three-stage education system.

He founded a new direction in the theory of mechanism synthesis known as approximation kinematic geometry, which studies a special class of problems related to the approximate reproduction of given movements. The theoretical foundations of this direction are presented in his monograph "Approximate Synthesis of Mechanisms," published in 1982.

Recognition and Honors

In 1986, he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, and in 1996, he became a full member of NAS RA. From 1989 to 2006, he was a member of the Presidium of NAS RA, and from 1994, he held the position of Vice-President of this academy.

He has authored over 150 scientific publications, including several monographs, and is the holder of 35 copyright certificates and patents for inventions. From 1990 to 1995, he was a deputy of the Supreme Council of Armenia. In 2011, he was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the RA. He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor (1985), the Anania Shirakatsi Medal (1999), the Mesrop Mashtots Order (2003), and the NKR Medal of Gratitude (2008). He passed away on September 25, 2024, at the age of 83.
