Henri Greisch: A Trailblazing Communist Leader

Early Life and Political Activism

Henri Greisch, a pivotal figure in Luxembourg's political landscape, was a skilled metalworker who emerged as a formidable advocate for the working class. Inspired by socialist ideologies, he joined the Socialist movement before the outbreak of World War I. Greisch's radical views resonated with a growing faction within the Social Democratic Party of Luxembourg, and he soon ascended to leadership of this left-wing contingent in 1919.

Foundation of the Communist Party of Luxembourg

Greisch's unwavering belief in communism led him to play a pivotal role in the January 1921 founding of the Communist Party of Luxembourg (KPL). As the party's political secretary, he skillfully guided its nascent organization. His leadership was further solidified at the second KPL congress in May 1921, where he was elected as its chairman.

Resistance and Imprisonment

With the advent of World War II, German troops occupied Luxembourg in 1940. Greisch promptly went into hiding, directing the activities of the communist resistance from the shadows. However, his covert operations were tragically cut short in September when the Gestapo apprehended him. Imprisoned, Greisch's indomitable spirit shone through until his untimely demise.
