Zina Linn Garrison is a former American professional tennis player who had a successful career in the 1980s. She was born on November 16, 1963, in Toledo, Ohio. Garrison started playing tennis at the age of ten and showed great promise from a young age.
Early Success
In 1981, at the age of 17, Garrison won the Wimbledon and US Open junior titles, becoming the world champion among girls according to the International Tennis Federation. Her achievements gained recognition, and on January 6, 1982, a day was declared in her honor in Washington, D.C.
Professional Career
In 1982, Garrison turned professional and quickly made her mark in the tennis world. In her first Grand Slam tournament, the French Open, she reached the quarterfinals, where she was defeated by Martina Navratilova. Navratilova would prove to be a formidable opponent for Garrison, also defeating her at Wimbledon and the US Open later that year. Despite these losses, Garrison finished the year ranked 29th in the world and was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year.
Continued Success
Garrison continued to have a successful career in the following years. In 1983, she reached her first professional tournament final at the US Open, and in 1984, she won her first professional singles title in Zurich. She also made her debut for the US Fed Cup team in 1984, contributing to their victory over Italy. In 1985, Garrison reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals at the US Open, showcasing her consistent performance in Grand Slam events.

In 1987, Garrison achieved her first Grand Slam success. Alongside Sherwood Stewart, she won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open. The following year, Garrison and Stewart triumphed again, winning the mixed doubles at Wimbledon. She also won two medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, claiming the bronze in singles and the gold in doubles with Shriver.
Later Career
In 1989, Garrison reached the final of the Australian Open mixed doubles event for the second time, but fell short of victory. She continued to perform well, reaching the semifinals of the US Open and winning multiple singles titles. Garrison reached her career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world in 1989, solidifying her status as one of the top players of the era. She also continued to represent the United States in the Fed Cup, contributing to their success in 1989.
