Early Career
Zvonimir Vukić, a Serbian footballer, began his professional career with FK Begej Žitište, playing 28 matches and scoring 6 goals. He then joined FK Proleter Zrenjanin in 1996, appearing in 35 matches and netting 3 times.
European Ambitions
Vukić's talent caught the attention of several European clubs, including Partizan Belgrade, Crvena Zvezda, and Arminia Bielefeld. Despite training with Arminia and preparing to sign a contract, he ultimately penned a deal with Atlético Madrid. However, his hopes of playing for the first team were dashed as he was relegated to the youth squad. FIFA and UEFA both upheld the club's decision.
Return to Serbia and Ukraine
In 2000, Vukić joined Partizan Belgrade and quickly established himself as a key player. Three years later, he signed a five-year contract with Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee of €4.27 million. In his debut Ukrainian Premier League match, he scored a goal against Metalurh Zaporizhzhia. Vukić's performances earned him recognition as one of the league's top foreign players.
English Adventure
In 2005, Vukić was loaned to Portsmouth in the English Premier League. He made his debut against Everton and quickly became a regular starter. Despite Portsmouth's financial troubles, Vukić remained with the club for two seasons, scoring 5 goals in 27 appearances.
Later Years
After Portsmouth's dissolution, Vukić signed a one-year contract with Blackburn Rovers in 2011, which was extended for another year. In 2004, he was named one of the top 10 footballers in Serbia and Montenegro by the newspaper "Sportski žurnal."
Personal Life
In 2004, Vukić narrowly escaped death during the Indian Ocean earthquake while vacationing in the Maldives. He married in the summer of 2005.
