Ahmed Fahad Al-Sabah: Kuwaiti Minister of Energy

Ahmed Fahad Al-Sabah was born on August 12, 1963, and belongs to the ruling Al-Sabah family in Kuwait. Members of this family not only hold positions as head of state and prime minister but also lead major ministries such as defense, internal and foreign affairs, energy, and telecommunications.

Early Career and Sports Involvement

After graduating from Kuwait University with a degree in political science, Ahmed Fahad Al-Sabah initially pursued a career in sports. He served as the head of various sports committees in Kuwait, including the Olympic, football, and handball committees. In 1992, he was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee. In 2000, he was appointed responsible for the development of children and youth sports in the country. In 2002, he became the Minister of Information.

Leadership in Energy Sector

In the summer of the previous year, Ahmed Fahad Al-Sabah assumed the position of Minister of Energy. His expertise and experience in sports administration and government leadership made him uniquely qualified for this role. As Minister of Energy, he was responsible for overseeing Kuwait's energy sector and representing the country at international forums.

Chairmanship of OPEC

At the recent session of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) held in Vienna, Ahmed Fahad Al-Sabah was appointed as its new chairman. He succeeded Purnomo Yusgiantoro, the former Minister of Energy of Indonesia. Ahmed Fahad Al-Sabah is set to assume his duties as chairman at the beginning of 2005. OPEC, formed in September 1960 in Baghdad, consists of 11 member states. In 1998, Russia obtained observer status in OPEC.
