Wayne Allard: A Colorado Statesman
Early Life and EducationWayne Allard was born in 1943 in Fort Collins, Colorado, and grew up on a ranch near Walden. He attended schools in Walden and Fort Collins before graduating from Colorado State University in 1968 with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.
Veterinary Practice and Family
During his veterinary studies, Allard married Joan Malcolm, a microbiology student at Colorado State University. They established the Allard Animal Hospital in Loveland, Colorado, and welcomed two daughters, Kristy and Shelly.
Political Beginnings
In 1982, while continuing his veterinary practice, Allard entered politics by joining the Colorado State Senate. He represented Larimer and Weld counties from 1982 to 1990.
U.S. House of Representatives
In 1990, Allard was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1991 to 1997.
U.S. Senate
In 1996, Allard was elected by the Republican Party to the U.S. Senate. He was re-elected in 2002 and served until 2009. During his time in the Senate, Allard focused on issues of agriculture, national defense, and education.
