Early Life and Education

Alexander Ankvab was born in Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia. His father worked as a police officer, and Alexander followed in his footsteps. He pursued higher education at Rostov State University in southern Russia, earning a degree in law.

Political Career in Abkhazia

After independence from the Soviet Union, Ankvab entered the Supreme Council of Abkhazia. He served as the Minister of Internal Affairs for the Abkhaz separatist government during the conflict with Georgia. After the conflict's conclusion, Ankvab relocated to Moscow, where he became a successful businessman.

In 2000, Ankvab returned to Abkhazian politics. He founded the opposition party "Aitaira" ("Rebirth"). His attempt to run for president in 2004 was disqualified due to residency and language requirements. However, he joined forces with Sergey Bagapsh, whose successful presidential campaign he played a key role in.

Prime Minister and Vice President

Following Bagapsh's election in 2005, Ankvab became Prime Minister. He survived numerous assassination attempts, including grenade attacks in 2005, 2007, and 2010. In 2009, he was elected as Bagapsh's vice presidential candidate. After their victory in 2010, Ankvab assumed the vice presidency, while Sergey Shamba became Prime Minister.

Assassination Attempt

On September 23, 2010, unidentified individuals fired a grenade at Ankvab's two-story home. He sustained injuries in the attack.

Recent Developments

Ankvab has continued to serve as Prime Minister of Abkhazia since April 23, 2020. He is known for his strong support for Abkhazia's independence and for maintaining close ties with Russia.
