Aleksandrs Koļinko: Latvian Goalkeeping Legend
Aleksandrs Koļinko is a retired Latvian footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He enjoyed great success both in Latvia and abroad, earning the Latvian Footballer of the Year award twice.
Early Career and Rise to Stardom
Born in Riga, Koļinko began his football career at the renowned Rigas Futbola skola (RFS) academy. After establishing himself with RFS and its affiliated clubs, he made a significant move to England in 2000 when he was acquired by Crystal Palace for a fee of £600,000.
Turbulent Time at Crystal Palace
Koļinko's time at Crystal Palace was characterized by both success and adversity. Despite sharing goalkeeping duties with fellow Latvian Andris Rubīns, he failed to secure a consistent starting role. However, a well-documented conflict with manager Trevor Francis, which escalated into physical altercations, ultimately led to Koļinko's decision to leave the club in 2003.
Move to Russia and Return to Latvia
Following his departure from England, Koļinko joined Russian Premier League club Rostov. Despite interest from Spartak Moscow, he remained at Rostov before moving to Rubin Kazan in 2005. After a successful spell with Rubin, his playing time diminished in 2007, prompting his departure in 2008. He then had brief stints with Latvian club Olimp/RFS, Romanian side Dinamo București, and Ventspils.
Later Years and Legacy
In 2010, Koļinko joined Spartak Nalchik in Russia before returning to Latvia for a season with FK Baltika Kaliningrad. He represented Latvia at the 2004 UEFA European Championship, playing every minute of the tournament.
Throughout his career, Koļinko was known for his agility, quick reflexes, and leadership qualities. He remains one of the most respected and decorated goalkeepers in Latvian football history, having been named Latvian Footballer of the Year in 2006 and 2014.
