Early Life and Education
Józef Wieniawski was born on May 23, 1837, in Lublin, Poland, to a musical family. His father, Thomas Wieniawski, was a violinist and composer, while his mother, Regina Wolff, was a pianist. Wieniawski's early musical education began under the guidance of his parents.
Studies in Berlin and Paris
At the age of 13, Wieniawski was sent to Berlin to study violin at the Royal Academy of Music with Ferdinand David. He also took composition lessons from Siegfried Dehn. In 1855, he moved to Paris to continue his studies with Lambert Massart on violin and François Bazin on composition.
Concert Debut and Tours
Wieniawski made his concert debut in 1857 at the age of 20. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosity and expressive playing. Over the next few years, he undertook extensive concert tours throughout Europe, establishing himself as one of the leading violinists of his time.
Marriage and Career Highlights
In 1861, Wieniawski married Isabella Hampton, the daughter of a British diplomat. The couple had five children. In 1875, Wieniawski was appointed professor of violin at the Brussels Conservatory, where he taught for the next decade. During this period, he also composed some of his most popular works, including his Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 22.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1886, Wieniawski returned to Poland and settled in Warsaw. He continued to perform and teach until his death on April 11, 1910. Wieniawski is considered one of the greatest violinists of the 19th century. His compositions, particularly his concertos, are still widely performed today.
