German Officer in Two World Wars

Early Life and Military Service

During World War I, a young German officer volunteered to serve in the army, joining a mountain infantry battalion. Despite his service, he later left the military.

Re-enlistment and WWII

In 1937, the officer rejoined the Wehrmacht as a reserve lieutenant (without graduating from a military academy). By 1939, he had risen to the rank of senior lieutenant and was commanding an infantry company.

Polish and French Campaigns

The officer participated in both the Polish and French campaigns, earning Iron Crosses of both degrees and the Knight's Cross in December 1940.

Eastern Front and Gallantry

On June 22, 1941, he entered the German-Soviet war as a captain commanding a battalion of the 57th Infantry Division, fighting in Ukraine. In February 1943, he received the Oak Leaves (awarded to the 194th recipient) to his Knight's Cross for his actions during the Battle of Kharkov.

Promotion and Further Awards

In November 1943, the officer became the commander of the 199th Grenadier Regiment and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In June 1944, his valor in the battles on the Dnieper and in the Cherkassy Pocket earned him the Swords (awarded to the 70th recipient) to his Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.

Tragic End

On July 8, 1944, the lieutenant colonel fell in battle during the Bobruisk Pocket. He was posthumously promoted to colonel.
