Early Life and Education

Jānis Straume, a prominent Latvian politician, was born on August 3, 1943, in the Kalnsnava parish of the Madona district in Latvia. From 1960 to 1962, he pursued a junior zootechnician program at the first agricultural polytechnic school. He then attended the Riga Soviet-Party school from 1964 to 1967 and graduated from the Correspondence Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1973.

Political Career

Straume's political journey began in 1964 when he became an instructor for the Madona district committee of the Komsomol youth organization. He held various positions within the Ventaspils district, including deputy chairman of the "Komunisma Ceļš" collective farm, first secretary of the Ventaspils district committee of the Komsomol, and head of a department at the Ventaspils district party committee of Latvia.

In 1976, Straume was appointed chairman of the Ventaspils district executive committee, a position he held until 1979, when he became the first secretary of the Preiļi district party committee. Straume later held the position of first secretary of the Liepāja district committee of the Communist Party of Latvia from 1984 to 1988.

In 1988, Straume moved to Riga and assumed the role of deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Latvian SSR. He was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR and the fifth Saeima, Latvia's parliament, where he served from 1990 to 1995. From 1995 to 1998, he served as deputy chairman of the sixth Saeima, before becoming its chairman.

Post-Political Career

Following his political career, Straume became director of cooperation with CIS countries for the company "Euroconsultant," which specialized in economics and finance, transport, and legal services. In 1999, he was elected to the Council of the Joint Stock Company "Trasta Komercbanka" and later became the bank's deputy chairman.

Party Membership and Honors

Straume was a member of the CPSU from 1963 to 1990, when he was expelled with the accusation of engaging in "splittist activity." He was a candidate for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia and received the Order of Friendship from Russia.

Later Years and Legacy

Jānis Straume, a respected figure in Latvian politics, passed away on April 26, 2024, at the age of 80. He left a lasting legacy in Latvia, where he played a significant role in the country's transition from Soviet rule to independence.
