Lilly Helveg Petersen

Lilly Helveg Petersen was a prominent Danish politician and educator, known for her contributions to women's rights and urban planning.

Early Life and Education

Born into a seafaring family on the island of Tåsinge, Helveg Petersen inherited a strong sense of political activism from her mother, who was actively involved in the local Radical Left party. Helveg Petersen completed her teacher training at the Svendborg Teacher's College in 1933 and taught at a high school in Odense before moving to a school for the deaf in Nyborg.

Marriage and Public Service

In 1936, she married Kristjan Helveg Petersen, a politician. Despite her family responsibilities, Helveg Petersen continued to pursue her career in education and community service. She co-authored an influential textbook on home economics in 1942, which aimed to empower young women with both practical skills and a broader understanding of their choices in life. In 1960, she published a textbook on family studies.

Political Ambitions

Helveg Petersen unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Folketing (Danish parliament) several times, starting in 1947. Nevertheless, her expertise in education and women's issues was highly valued by the Radical Left party. From 1965 to 1974, she chaired the Committee on Education of the National Women's Commission, focusing on continuing education opportunities for adult women.

Mayor of Copenhagen

In 1970, Helveg Petersen was elected to the Copenhagen City Council and appointed Mayor of the City's Fifth Magisterate (responsible for transportation, energy, and the environment), a position she held until 1978. During her tenure, Copenhagen transitioned from tramways to buses, waterfront areas were enhanced, and Helveg Petersen voiced strong opposition to the transportation of oil through the city.

Legacy

Lilly Helveg Petersen's contributions to Copenhagen and beyond continue to be recognized. A square in the Østerbro district of the city bears her name, and her legacy as a pioneer in women's rights and urban planning remains an inspiration to future generations.
