Biography of Alicia Lawhon

Alicia Lawhon was born in Nayarit, Mexico. She spent her childhood watching her grandmother, who was a seamstress, sew clothing from fabric scraps and hand-spun silk yarn. Alicia started sewing herself in Hollywood in the 80s and during her school years, she kept a journal to make sure she never wore the same thing twice. The first item she ever made was a pair of pants.

In 1990, Alicia began working at Ron Herman/Fred Segal Melrose, initially as a salesperson and then as a manager. It was there that she started her own collection and became a designer in 1996. Working with vintage fabrics, repurposed military uniforms, and distressed cotton fabric, she transformed parts of naval uniforms into skirts and waistbands of old jeans into practical belts. She blended refined experimental design sensibility with a West Coast rock star attitude. She wanted to model clothes like Neil Young plays the guitar, beautiful and rich, yet with a touch of the desert. It is clothing you can wear in the forest all day and then shake off the leaves at night.

Alicia's clothing has appeared in numerous music videos, movies, and TV shows. She has sewn for stars such as Alanis Morissette, Christina Aguilera, Anthony Kiedis, Winona Ryder, Linda Evangelista, Liv Tyler, Mick Jagger, Sting, and recently, for an Aerosmith performance. She has received several awards and was chosen to represent the United States at the Young Designers Show in Hong Kong.
