Early Life and Career
Aliou Cissé was born on March 24, 1976, in Ziguinchor, Senegal. His football career began with French club Lille, before moving to Sedan and then to Paris Saint-Germain.
International Career
In 2002, Cissé became captain of the Senegalese national team, leading them to the quarter-finals of the World Cup and a second place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations. His impressive performances earned him a move to English club Birmingham City.
Birmingham City and Portsmouth
Cissé's stint at Birmingham City was plagued by disciplinary issues, leading to his departure in 2003. He then signed a two-year contract with Portsmouth.
Personal Tragedy
In 2002, Cissé's family was tragically affected by the MV Le Joola ferry disaster, in which over 1,800 people lost their lives.
Coaching Career
Cissé served as interim coach of the Senegalese national team in 2012, before taking over as assistant coach of the U-23 team until 2013. In 2015, he was appointed as head coach of the senior national team.
World Cup 2018 and Meme Stardom
Cissé's emotional reaction to Senegal's second goal against Poland at the 2018 World Cup made him a viral sensation. His stylish celebration and smoldering good looks earned him the moniker "dreadlocked icon."
