Early Life and Political Beginnings

Alpha Condé was born into the Malinke ethnic group in Guinea. At the age of 15, he immigrated to France, where he attended school in Paris and studied at the Sorbonne. Due to his opposition to the regimes of Ahmed Sékou Touré and Lansana Conté, Condé remained in exile until 1991.

Leadership of the Rally of the Guinean People

Upon his return to Guinea, Condé became the leader of the Rally of the Guinean People (RPG), an opposition party affiliated with the Socialist International. The RPG drew support primarily from members of the Malinke ethnic group.

Presidential Campaigns and Imprisonment

Condé participated in the 1993 and 1998 presidential elections, receiving 19.6% and 16.6% of the votes, respectively. Following the 1998 election, he was arrested and later sentenced to a five-year prison term for allegedly plotting to assassinate President Conté. He was released early in 2001.

Exile and Return

Following his release from prison, Condé was banned from political activity and lived in France from 2001 to 2005. In 2009, he called for protests against the "criminal regime" in Guinea, and in 2010, he announced his candidacy for the presidency.

Election to the Presidency

In the first round of the 2010 presidential elections, Condé finished second behind Cellou Dalein Diallo. In the runoff election, he declared victory with 52.52% of the votes, defeating Diallo.

Presidency

Alpha Condé became the President of Guinea on December 21, 2010. As President, he has faced challenges related to governance, corruption, and economic development. He was re-elected in 2015 and 2020, despite protests and allegations of electoral irregularities.

In 2021, Condé proposed constitutional changes that would have allowed him to run for a third term in office. However, this move was met with widespread opposition, and he was ultimately overthrown in a military coup in September 2021.
