Early Life
Malam Bacai Sanhá was born in the Quinara region of Guinea-Bissau. As a member of the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), he pursued political science studies in East Germany.
Political Career
Following the country's independence from Portugal in 1974, Sanhá held several prominent government positions:
Member of the PAIGC Politburo (1975-1976)
Governor of the mainland Gabú region (1986-1990)President of the National Federation of Trade Unions (1991-1992)
Member of the Cabinet of Ministers (1992-1999)
Presidency
After President João Bernardo Vieira was overthrown in a civil war, Sanhá became the interim head of state in 1999. In the presidential elections that year, he received 23.37% of the votes in the first round but lost to Kumba Yala in the second round.
In 2003, Sanhá ran against Vieira again, losing in the second round and contesting the results. However, a compromise was eventually reached between the politicians.
In the 2009 presidential elections, Sanhá emerged victorious as the candidate for the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, serving as President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau from September 8, 2009, to January 9, 2012.
