Early Life and Education
Armenian political and statesman Levon Ter-Petrosyan was born in Yerevan. He excelled academically, graduating with honors from the O. Ovannisyan School No. 52 in 1972. He then pursued higher education at Yerevan State University, where he obtained a degree in history and ethnography in 1978.
Academic Career and the Karabakh Movement
After university, Ter-Petrosyan served as a senior researcher at the Armenian State Museum of History from 1978 to 1983. In 1983, he successfully defended his PhD dissertation at the Miklukho-Maklay Institute of Ethnography in Moscow, earning a doctorate in historical sciences.
Ter-Petrosyan became actively involved in the Karabakh movement in 1988, joining the "Karabakh" committee and eventually rising to a leadership role.
Imprisonment and Literary Work
In October 1989, Ter-Petrosyan was arrested along with other committee members and exiled to Moscow. During his imprisonment, he wrote his first collection of essays, "Unintended Letters." Upon his release in April 1990, he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
Mayor of Yerevan and Business Career
From 1990 to 1992, Ter-Petrosyan served as Mayor of Yerevan. After his tenure as mayor, he ventured into business from 1992 to 1994.
