Lea Wermelin: A Trailblazing Danish Politician

Lea Wermelin is a Danish politician who has served as the Minister for Environment in the Frederiksen Cabinet since 27 June 2019. Prior to that, she was a member of the Folketing (Parliament) from 2015 to 2019.

Early Life and Education

Born on 10 May 1985, in Rønne, Bornholm, Lea Wermelin is the daughter of a primary school teacher and a nurse. She attended Bornholm Gymnasium from 2001 to 2004 and earned a Master of Science in Political Science from the University of Copenhagen in 2011. Wermelin also spent a semester studying political science at Lund University in Sweden.

Early Political Career

Lea Wermelin began her political career in the youth wing of the Social Democrats party. She held various positions within the organization, including member of the council (2003-2004) and member of the executive committee (2006-2010). From 2004 to 2005, she worked as a substitute teacher at Søndermark School in Frederiksberg.

Wermelin also gained valuable experience through internships and positions in the Danish government. She worked as an assistant to Folketing member Thomas Adelskov from 2006 to 2008, participated in a local democracy development project in Tanzania in 2008, and held internships at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2008-2010) and DR2 television channel (2010).

Election to the Folketing and Government Appointment

In 2015, Lea Wermelin was elected to the Folketing as a representative of the Social Democrats from the Bornholm constituency. She served as chair of the Tax Committee (2016-2019) and deputy chair of the Energy, Supply, and Climate Committee as well as the Environment and Food Committee.

On 27 June 2019, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen appointed Lea Wermelin as Minister for Environment in her cabinet. In this role, Wermelin has been a vocal advocate for environmental protection and sustainable development.

Personal Life

Lea Wermelin is married and has two children. She is an avid hiker and enjoys spending time in the outdoors.
