Andrei Shiryaev: A Poet's Legacy

Andrei Shiryaev, a Russian poet and prose writer, believed that individuals have the right to end their own lives. Faced with a debilitating illness, Shiryaev chose to take his own life before paralysis consumed his entire body.

Early Life and Education

Andrei Vladimirovich Shiryaev was born in Tselinograd, Kazakhstan. He studied poetry at the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow under the tutelage of renowned poet and translator Yuri Davidovich Levitansky.

Diverse Career

Throughout his life, Shiryaev held numerous creative positions. He worked as a journalist, a philharmonic artist, and later as an editor for the magazine "Hard&Soft" and the humor department of the website "pole.ru."

Emigration and Literary Pursuits

In the early 2000s, Shiryaev left Russia for San Rafael, Ecuador. There, he engaged in tourism, owning a resort in the local jungle on a tributary of the Amazon. Despite his new ventures, Shiryaev continued to write. He became a leading organizer of the popular science fiction literary competition "Ecuador," a prestigious event comparable to the renowned "Greika."

Poetry and Recognition

Shiryaev was widely acclaimed as one of Russia's most gifted contemporary poets. However, his work remained relatively unknown to the general public.

Tragic Suicide

On October 18, 2013, Shiryaev tragically ended his life. He left behind a suicide note, which was later posted on Facebook and translated into Spanish. In the note, he expressed his love for his loved ones, declared that he had completed his affairs, and explained his reasons for committing suicide.

Health Struggles

Shiryaev had been suffering from serious health problems, including diabetes, two heart attacks, and a stroke. As a result, he developed partial paralysis that was gradually progressing. Determined to avoid a life of physical incapacity, Shiryaev chose to end his life on his own terms.
