Anita Kalinde: Malawian MP and Controversial Figure
Anita Kalinde is a Member of Parliament (MP) for Thyolo North in Malawi. She gained significant media attention in 2011 for her involvement in a physical altercation in Parliament with former Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Aarrone Sangala.
Parliamentary Assault
During a parliamentary session on the murder of Robert Chasowa, Kalinde demanded that the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security address certain allegations. In response, Sangala insinuated that body part exhumations had been prevalent under the previous UDF regime. He mentioned that Kalinde herself and her late husband, Marshal Mdukulire Mbwatalika, known as "The Duke," were implicated in a case involving body part removal and sale.
Kalinde accused Sangala of using delaying tactics and digressing to avoid answering questions. She demanded that Sangala retract his statement. Sangala refused. As Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda adjourned the session for tea break, Kalinde promptly approached Sangala and grabbed him by the neck, tearing his shirt in the process.
Some accused Sangala of ripping his own shirt to exaggerate the extent of the assault. Following a review of the incident, including video footage of the attack, Kalinde was suspended for thirty days for assault.[4] The video of the assault went viral in Malawi and beyond.
