Early Life and Career

Päivi Susanna Kontula was born on March 30, 1977, in Pori, Finland. She earned her doctorate in 2002 with a dissertation on student movements in the 1970s. Kontula engaged in multiple research projects related to prostitution in Finland, resulting in a published article by Tampere University and work assessing the criminalization of prostitution and violence against women.

Political Involvement

In 2004, Kontula was elected to the Tampere City Council, where she served until 2017. She was re-elected in 2008 and placed second in vote shares within the Left Alliance party from 2008 to 2012. In 2011, Kontula was elected to the Finnish Parliament as a representative of the Left Alliance from Pirkanmaa's 7th constituency.

Parliamentary Career

Kontula has served as a member of the Employment Committee and has previously been part of the Constitutional Law Committee. She was re-elected to Parliament in 2015 and 2019.

Activism and Advocacy

During her time at university, Kontula held the position of Vice-Chair of the Sex Industry Association. She has also been actively involved in various social activist organizations. In addition to her work on prostitution and violence against women, Kontula has also focused on the impact of racism on employment and residential opportunities.

International Incident

On January 13, 2020, Kontula was detained by Israeli police at the Israeli-Gaza border while attempting to organize a demonstration with activists to highlight Finland's arms trade with Israeli companies.
