Biography of Antoine Cortez Jamison
Antoine Cortez Jamison is an American professional basketball player, currently playing for the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He primarily plays as a power forward but is also capable of playing as a small forward.
Early Life and Education
Jamison was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and completed his middle and high school education in Charlotte, North Carolina. He played basketball and American football in middle school and focused on basketball at Providence High School. In his senior year, he was selected for the USA High School All-American team.
After graduating from high school in 1995, Jamison enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played for the university's basketball team for three seasons. He averaged 19 points and 9.9 rebounds per game during his college days. In his third season, he received several awards, including the John Wooden Award, the James Naismith Award, and the Oscar Robertson Trophy, recognizing him as the best player in college basketball.
Jamison decided to enter the NBA draft a year before completing his education and left the university. On March 1, 2000, his jersey number 33 was retired by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
NBA Career
Jamison was selected as the fourth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors in the 1998 NBA draft but was immediately traded to the Golden State Warriors for Vince Carter, his former college teammate. In his debut season, Jamison failed to secure a spot in the starting lineup for the Warriors. However, he showed significant improvement in the following season and set a personal scoring record, averaging 24.9 points per game in the 2000/2001 season. He played a total of five seasons for the Warriors, becoming the team's leader during his last four seasons. Despite his individual success, the team did not make it to the playoffs during his tenure.
In 2003, Jamison was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he played as a key contributor off the bench. He received the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award and made his first playoff appearance during his single season with the Mavericks. After the season, he was traded to the Washington Wizards for Jerry Stackhouse and a first-round draft pick.
In the 2004/2005 season, Jamison became the starting power forward for the Washington Wizards. He was selected for his first NBA All-Star Game and helped the team achieve a record of 45 wins and 37 losses, the best result for the Wizards in 26 years. They reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in the playoffs, marking the team's first playoff appearance since 1997.
Jamison was invited to the NBA All-Star Game for the second time in the 2007/2008 season. He achieved his first double-double season, averaging 21.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. On June 30, 2008, he signed a new four-year contract with the Wizards worth $50 million. He expressed his desire to play for the Washington team until the end of his career.
