Antoine Louis Albitte
Early Life and Political CareerAntoine Louis Albitte was a French lawyer and an influential member of the National Convention. Elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1791, he proposed numerous measures for military organization that were considered impractical and uncompromising.
His radical views were evident during the events of August 10, when he joined the mob in destroying royal statues. He also displayed cruelty in the Department of Seine-Inférieure, where he was sent as a commissioner by the Convention.
Conviction and Escape
Albitte's extremist actions led to his arrest and conviction. Sentenced to death, he narrowly escaped execution by fleeing.
Military Service and Death
After returning to France under an amnesty in 1795, Albitte entered military service. He fought with Napoleon's army during the invasion of Russia in 1812. Albitte perished during the army's disastrous retreat from Moscow.
