Early Life and Education
Arakel, later known as Aghbiur Serob, was born in 1863 in the village of Kurter in the Ottoman Empire. He studied at the Arakelots Monastery School in Mush.
Joining the National Liberation Movement
In 1880, Aghbiur Serob joined the fight against Turkish oppression. He operated in the villages of Sassoun and Taron, leading armed groups of fedayeen.
Arrest and Escape
In 1882, Aghbiur Serob was arrested by Turkish authorities and sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, he escaped and resumed his guerrilla activities.
Daшнаksutyun and Travels
In 1889, Aghbiur Serob first visited the Russian Caucasus. In 1892, he attended the first congress of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, Daшнаksutyun, in Tbilisi.
Final Days and Death
Aghbiur Serob was killed in battle against Kurdish bands in the Kelisoru gorge while traveling from Khnus to Mush.
Legacy
Aghbiur Serob's exploits inspired numerous Armenian songs. A legendary battalion named "Aghbiur Serob" fought for the liberation of Artsakh. In 1992, the battalion perished in a heroic battle against overwhelming Azerbaijani forces near Askeran.
