Early Life and EducationBorn in Ukraine, the renowned Ukrainian-Russian musicologist graduated from the Kyiv Conservatory in 1920 as a pianist under the tutelage of Heinrich Neuhaus. He subsequently completed his studies in 1922 as a composer under Reinhold Glière and Boleslav Yavorsky. In 1944, he obtained his Doctor of Arts degree.
Career in Music
Military Service and TeachingFrom 1919 to 1921, he played a pivotal role as the director of the military music school in Kyiv. Subsequently, he held teaching positions at the Kyiv Conservatory (1923-1925) and the Moscow Conservatory (1930-1934).
Publications and Research
The musicologist authored several notable books on prominent composers, including "Claude Debussy" (1935), "Alexander Scriabin" (1945), and "Tchaikovsky" (1959). After his passing, "Compositions by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel" (1963) was published posthumously.
Beethoven Monography
In 1940, he significantly contributed to the "Life of Remarkable People" series with his biography on Beethoven. This work was later revised and expanded into a comprehensive monography in 1952. It went through multiple editions in 1963, 1966, and 1971. The monography was also translated into various languages, including Hungarian, Estonian, and Romanian.
