Arseny Anatolyevich Gulevich(1867-1946) was a prominent Russian military commander, general, and military theorist.
Early Life and Education
Gulevich was born into the nobility in 1867. He graduated from the Moscow 3rd Cadet Corps in 1883 and the 3rd Alexandrovsky Military School in 1885. He joined the elite Leib Guard Finland Regiment as a sub-lieutenant.
Military Career
In 1892, Gulevich graduated from the prestigious Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff with distinction. He served in various staff positions, including as a senior adjutant and company commander. In 1902, he was promoted to colonel and commanded a battalion in the Leib Guard Finland Regiment.
Academic Contributions
Gulevich made significant contributions to military theory. In 1899, he became an extraordinary professor at the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff. He served as an ordinary professor from 1904 and was elected an honorary member of the academy in 1913.
Service During World War I
During World War I, Gulevich held various high-ranking staff positions. He served as chief of staff for the 6th and 9th armies. In 1914, he took charge of the 14th Army Corps during its retreat.
Post-Revolution and White Movement
After the October Revolution in 1917, Gulevich joined the White movement. He served as a representative for General Yudenich in Finland and led the Russian Red Cross there.
Exile and Later Years
In 1920, Gulevich moved to Paris, where he taught at the Higher Military Scientific Courses. He became involved in various Russian military organizations and veterans' associations. In 1941, he supported the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
